GOOGLE SEARCH / WHATSAPP ENQUIRY
Design the Handoff from Google Search to WhatsApp Enquiry
For a Malaysian SME, the search click is only the first moment of trust. The page, proof and WhatsApp prompt must carry the same context into a human conversation without promising a ranking or a reply time.
Start by matching the searcher’s decision
Google Search Central’s SEO Starter Guide describes SEO as helping search engines understand content and helping users find a site and decide whether to visit. That makes the first screen a decision aid, not a decorative landing page. If someone searches for a service in Shah Alam, Johor Bahru or Penang, the page should state what the business does, who it serves and what the visitor can ask next.
Before adding a WhatsApp button, write one sentence that completes the search: “We help this buyer with this service in this area” — only where the business can substantiate it. Put the relevant service page, proof or process beside that sentence. The aim is not to make every visitor message; it is to help the right visitor recognise that they are in the right place.
- Match the page title and headline to the visitor’s intent.
- Name the product, service and service area only where the business can support the wording.
- Place one clear next action near the first useful proof, then repeat it after the decision detail.
Give the visitor a useful reason to open WhatsApp
The current Google Web Sifu homepage frames its online growth system as a path from customer search to customer enquiry and lists WhatsApp Enquiries among its service themes. That is a useful design principle for Malaysian SMEs: the CTA should explain why a conversation is worthwhile, not merely say “Chat now”.
A Malaysian contractor might ask for site details; a manufacturer might need a drawing or specification; a wholesaler may need quantity and delivery area. Keep the example generic unless the business has published a real process. A label such as “Send your project details on WhatsApp” sets a next step without claiming that a quote or reply is guaranteed.
- Use a short CTA that names the information the visitor can send.
- Align the CTA with the page the visitor just read, not with a generic site-wide slogan.
- Offer a form or email route for requirements that are longer than a first chat.
Pass context without pretending the platform did the work
The official Google Web Sifu contact page exposes a public WhatsApp “Enquiry Now” link to a wa.me destination, alongside a contact form, phone and email. An SME can use the same handoff idea with a prefilled message that carries the page topic: “I found your service page. My location is __. I need __. Target date: __.” The visitor can edit it before sending.
That message is a convenience, not a CRM record or a promise of response. Do not silently attach personal data, claim that Google has verified the enquiry, or imply that a WhatsApp click equals a qualified lead. Show the destination, keep the link readable on mobile and test the message text after URL encoding.
- Use page-specific prefill text so the recipient knows what the visitor was reading.
- Ask only for the first details needed to route the conversation.
- Keep phone, email or a form visible instead of forcing every visitor into WhatsApp.
Keep the page useful when WhatsApp is not the right channel
The official contact route includes a form and other contact options; this matters because not every buyer wants to start with chat. Some procurement teams prefer email, some customers need a file upload, and some visitors may be browsing outside business hours. A handoff is stronger when the page gives a clear alternative rather than treating WhatsApp as the only door.
Create a simple hierarchy: primary action, alternative action and what happens next. For example, invite a short WhatsApp brief, offer the contact form for longer requirements, and link to the relevant service page for people still comparing. Do not publish an operating-hour or response-time promise unless the business keeps it current.
- Keep form labels explicit and explain which fields are needed for a first reply.
- Make every contact alternative readable and usable on a phone and keyboard.
- Explain what to prepare instead of promising a quote, appointment or approval.
Measure the route you can actually verify
Google’s documentation says search visibility is not guaranteed and changes can take time to appear. Separate search diagnostics from enquiry handling: use the checks available in Search technical requirements and Search Console to inspect page and indexing signals, then keep a lightweight internal record of which page, campaign or QR code the visitor used. A WhatsApp conversation should be reviewed by the business, not re-labelled as a Google ranking result.
Run a monthly handoff check: open the page from a phone, tap the CTA, read the prefilled text, confirm the contact destination and verify that the page still matches the offer. Record broken links, unclear fields and unanswered internal routing questions. This produces actionable maintenance work without inventing conversion numbers.
- Check that the landing page and contact destination return a working response.
- Review message context, ownership and the person responsible for follow-up.
- Treat ranking, lead and response results as unproven until the business defines a measurement method.
Build the next step around a real conversation
Use the official Google Web Sifu contact route as a practical reference for presenting a form, public contact choices and a WhatsApp enquiry path. The route is an invitation to review the handoff, not a promise that every business will receive the same result.
